Organdy Lace

Organdy lace pairs embroidery with a crisp, sheer organdy base — a cotton or polyester weave that is transparent like tulle but far stiffer, holding its shape rather than falling softly. That structure makes organdy lace a natural choice for standing collars, structured bridal bodices and sleeves, architectural eveningwear, and home décor pieces such as curtains or table pieces where a defined silhouette matters as much as the embroidery itself.

Our organdy lace, including its appliqué motifs, collars, yardage and trims, is sourced as genuine European deadstock: rescued mill-end rolls rather than newly commissioned production. AnBella Designs sells organdy lace by the metre for designers, ateliers, bridal makers and home sewists who want the crispness of organdy with an embroidered finish already applied. As with all our deadstock ranges, stock is limited and non-repeating, so once a particular organdy lace print or colourway is gone, it will not be rewoven or reordered.

What is organdy fabric?

Organdy is the crispest of the sheer cottons: a fine, balanced plain weave, combed and then given an acid or resin finish that sets its stiffness permanently. That finish is what separates it from other sheer fabrics — organdy stands up rather than falling, holds a pressed crease, and keeps its body through wear.

Organdy or organza?

The two are easily confused. Classic organdy is woven from cotton and is matte; organza is traditionally silk, and now often polyester or nylon, with a faint sheen. Both are sheer and crisp, but organdy has the drier hand and the flatter finish while organza reflects more light. Our own organdy lace is worked on a cotton or polyester organdy base.

What organdy is used for

Structured bridal bodices, sleeves and standing collars; christening gowns and heirloom childrenswear; sew-in underlining and interfacing where the stiffener must stay sheer; historical and costume sewing; and home décor such as sheer curtains and table pieces. Press with a hot iron and steam, and wash cool or by hand — heavy laundering softens the finish over time.
